Gossip on the Internet is widely believed to spread like an epidemic,
However, Wenrong Zheng, a physicist at Shandong Normal University, believes that the infectious disease model cannot accurately describe the spread of rumors: the infectious disease model treats the spread of rumors as a process of passive infection, ignoring human behavior and psychological changes in the real world, as well as the impact of external events on the spread of rumors.
To address this shortcoming, Zheng and colleagues created a new rumor spreading model based on nuclear fission chain reactions.
The research report was published in AIP Advances.
The nuclear fission chain reaction process begins with the spontaneous splitting of a uranium nucleus into two smaller nuclei and multiple neutrons. If neutrons are absorbed by other uranium nuclei, they are more likely to split, triggering a chain fission reaction.
The two most common isotopes of uranium are uranium-238 and uranium-235, with the former absorbing multiple neutrons before splitting, while the latter absorbing only once to split.
In the new model, rumors are neutrons, the uranium-235 nucleus is the person who spreads the rumors immediately after receiving them, and the uranium-238 nucleus is the person who spreads the rumors after receiving them multiple times. Researchers believe that the new model is more accurate. In reality, many people must be exposed to rumors multiple times before deciding to spread them.
Internet rumors are common in people’s lives. What are “rumors”? According to statistics from research literature, most researchers believe that these contents are untrue and are fabricated and baseless information by purists.
However, some scholars believe that rumors are not just negative false news, but also unconfirmed news or explanations.
Based on the above research, this paper believes that rumors are the superimposed information of false news and real news based on events.
After dissemination, it will trigger public opinion, bring certain negative social impacts, and disrupt social harmony and stability, economic development, and even national security. Therefore, it is of great positive social significance to study the spread of online rumors, discover their spread laws, and provide theoretical and practical support for curbing the spread of rumors.
