Stack Overflow survey shows that programmers are not worried about AI

More than 65,000 developers participated in the annual survey of the programming question and answer community Stack Overflow to investigate for the first time whether AI affects the work of programmers.
The results show that only 12% of developers believe that AI threatens their current jobs, and 70% use AI tools as part of their workflow. Developers who use AI say its biggest benefit is increased productivity, followed by helping to learn new skills quickly.
The proportion of developers using AI tools has increased from 44% in 2023 to 62% in 2024. 71% of programmers with less than 5 years of experience have used AI in development, compared with 49% of programmers with 20 years of experience.
The most popular AI tool is ChatGPT (82%), twice as large as GitHub Copilot, and 74% of developers using ChatGPT want to continue using it.
But only 43% expressed trust in the accuracy of AI tools, and 45% believed that AI tools were difficult to handle complex tasks.
The survey also found that the unemployment rate for programmers has increased, but overall it is still only 4.4%; their median salary has dropped significantly, with the average salary of full-stack developers falling by 11% in 2024 compared with 2023 to US$63,333.
The survey also found that 38% of developers work full-time remotely, only 20% return to a pure office working model, and the rest work in a mixed office model. The most popular IDEs are still VS Code and Visual Studio, the most commonly used language is still Javascript, the most desirable language is Python, and the most desirable language is Rust.
