Google Launches Circle to Search

This is a new way to search for anything on your phone with simple gestures, without having to switch apps.

You can choose the content you’re interested in with simple gestures such as circling, highlighting, doodling, or tapping, without having to exit the current app.

The feature combines multiple searches – text and image search and the latest AI capabilities

In simple terms, Circle to Search is like a magic magnifying glass on your phone that allows you to circle things on the screen and tell you more about them without having to switch to another app.

Once you circle an item, Google automatically searches for relevant information, such as the brand of sunglasses or similar purchase options.

For example, if you see a picture of food and wonder, “Why are these hot dogs so popular?” you can circle that picture of a hot dog and ask a question. Google will help you find the answer.

Main features:

1. Search for on-screen content without switching apps: Circle to Search is a new search feature that allows users to search for on-screen content on Android phones without having to switch to another app.

2. Simple gesture operation: Users can choose the content they are interested in through simple gestures such as circling, highlighting, doodling, or clicking, and search for more information in the current application location.

For example, when you see something interesting on your phone, such as an item in a picture or video, you don’t need to log out of the current app to search. Just use your finger to draw a circle (or other gesture) around the content you are interested in on the screen, such as a pair of sunglasses or a bag.

3. Identify items in photos or videos: For example, if you’re watching a “Wear of the Day” video and the creator isn’t branded, you can long-press the home button or navigation bar to activate Circle to Search, and then use your favorite gesture to select items of interest (such as sunglasses) to quickly find similar purchasable options from online retailers.

3. Ask complex questions: When you browse social media and see an image of a food, such as a uniquely decorated hot dog, you can circle hot dogs through Circle to Search and ask questions, such as “Why are these so popular?”, and then get useful information from the web to quickly learn why these foods are popular.

4. Combine with multi-search: This feature combines multi-search – using both text and image search – with the latest AI upgrades to make it easier to understand concepts, ideas, or topics.

5. Currently only supports Android devices: Circle to Search will be available on selected high-end Android smartphones on January 31, including the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Circle to Search allows you to look at photos or videos.

If you see an item and are interested, you can quickly find out what it is. For example, if you see a cool bag in a video, you can use this function to quickly find information about that bag.

At the same time, when you use this function to search, some ads may also appear on the screen, which are related to the items you are searching for, just like ad slots on web pages.

With Circle to Search’s “multisearch” feature, you can search by text and image simultaneously. This feature combines the latest AI technology upgrades to make it easier to understand different concepts, ideas or topics from useful information available on the web.

For example, if you see a picture of a hot dog and are curious, you can use this feature to circle hot dogs and ask a question like, “Why are these hot dogs so popular?” You’ll quickly learn that these sweet-and-savory combinations are Korean hot dogs, popular because of their unique combination of flavors and textures – including meat or melted sticky cheese with a crispy outer crust – and the growing popularity of Korean cuisine.

In this way, your curiosity is satisfied, even though the photos might make you feel hungry.
