AI robot can crack image recognition CAPTCHA with 100% success rate

The CAPTCHA test is designed to determine whether online users are actually humans, not robots. CAPTCHA is the acronym for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”. Users using the Internet often encounter CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA tests. These tests are one way to manage robot activity, but the method is flawed.

Although CAPTCHA is designed to stop robots, CAPTCHA itself is automated. They are programmed to pop up at certain locations on the website and will automatically pass or invalidate users.

How does CAPTCHA work?

Traditional CAPTCHA includes requiring users to recognize letters, and some Web attributes are still used today. These letters add distortion, making it unlikely that robots will recognize them. To pass the test, the user must interpret the distorted text, type the correct letters in the form field, and finally submit the form. If the letters you type do not match, the user will be prompted to try again. Such tests are common on login forms, account registration forms, online voting and e-commerce settlement pages.

Below is a demonstration of the V2 version

Researchers at ETH Zurich report that using a specially trained image recognition model, an AI robot can crack ReCAPTCHA v2 with a 100% success rate.
Google’s reCAPTCHA v2 will display a set of Street View grids that ask users to identify which images contain bicycles, crosswalks, stairs, or traffic lights.
Google has phased out reCAPTCHA v2 and switched to reCAPTCHA v3, which identifies humans and robots by analyzing user interactions, eliminating the need for users to accept cumbersome challenges.
However, there are still millions of websites on the Internet that use reCAPTCHA v2, and websites that use reCAPTCHA v3 will also use reCAPTCHA v2 as a backup solution.
The researchers leveraged a fine-tuned version of the open source model YOLO (“You Only Look Once”). They said we are entering the post-reCAPTCHA era after a success rate of 100%.
