Google DeepMind open source AlphaChip, an artificial intelligence model for chip design

Google DeepMind announced on Thursday a breakthrough in artificial intelligence-driven electronic chip design: AlphaChip. It started as a research project in 2020 and is a reinforcement learning method for designing chip layouts. Google says it has used AlphaChip to create a “Superman chip layout” in its third-generation Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Google Sound says it can generate high-quality chip layouts in hours, while human experts require weeks or months of effort, and the design performance of model generation exceeds that of human experts.

Relevant technical details have been published in the journal Nature in the form of a paper (the address is in the description below the video). Google has also open-sourced AlphaChip’s pre-training checkpoint sharing model weights on GitHub (see the description below the video for the address). The company reported that AlphaChip’s impact has gone beyond Google’s reach. In addition to its new generation ARM-based data center chip Axion, chip design companies such as MediaTek and Samsung are adopting and building the technology for their chips. AlphaChip has sparked new research directions in the field of artificial intelligence for chip design, with the potential to optimize every stage of the chip design cycle, from computer architecture to manufacturing.

Users can uninstall the Windows Recall feature

The Recall feature was originally planned to be released with the Copilot PC in June, but due to security issues, Microsoft decided to delay its release and redesign it. The new Recall feature will be an option that users can choose whether to enable and can be completely uninstalled. Microsoft has also enhanced security for Recall features, including comprehensive encryption and support for Windows Hello.

The new Recall feature also includes other improvements, such as allowing users to filter specific apps and websites, delete content within specific time frames, and filter sensitive content. The new Recall feature is expected to be added to the preview version in October.

OpenAI plans to increase the price of ChatGPT to $44 within five years

OpenAI plans to set ChatGPT usage fees at $22 per month by the end of this year and gradually increase it to $44 over the next five years. According to documents obtained by The New York Times, OpenAI’s revenue in August was $300 million and is expected to reach $3.7 billion by the end of the year. However, a loss of $5 billion is expected this year due to various operating costs. In order to make up for the financial gap, OpenAI is looking for new investors and raising funds at a valuation of US$150 billion, which is expected to raise US$7 billion.

At the same time, OpenAI is transforming from a nonprofit organization to a for-profit company. This shift in business models will remove restrictions on investor returns, allowing greater flexibility and potentially higher returns in future investment negotiations.
