Apple told developers on Thursday that it will allow iPhone and iPad users in the European Union to delete the App Store or its Safari browser.
Apple has long vigorously protected the app store as the only gateway for digital content to its popular mobile devices. The change comes as the company relaxes control of EU equipment due to landmark new digital rules in the EU.
“EU users will be able to delete the App Store, messages, cameras, photos and Safari apps,” Apple said on its developer support page.
“Only settings and phones cannot be deleted.”
According to Apple, a special section has also been added that will allow iPhone or iPad users to manage presets for browsers, messages, phones and other functions.
“Because browser engines are constantly exposed to untrusted and potentially malicious content and can view sensitive user data, they are one of the most common attack vectors for malicious actors,” the iPhone manufacturer said.
“To help ensure users ‘online security, Apple will only authorize developers to implement alternative browser engines after meeting specific standards and committing to a series of ongoing privacy and security requirements, including timely security updates to address emerging threats and vulnerabilities.
App manufacturers previously needed to use Apple’s payment system on the app store, and the technology giant also gets a piece of the deal.
But the EU said the provisions prevent app developers from freely directing consumers to alternative payment methods, making Apple the first technology company ever to face charges of violating new laws under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Apple last month promised to make changes to comply with the DMA and resolve the findings of an investigation by the European Commission, the EU’s powerful antitrust regulator.
Apple said that starting in the fall, developers in the EU can “communicate and promote purchase offers” anywhere, such as through alternative app markets.
The change includes a new fee structure for customers to link out offers and content from apps.
The committee told AFP that “it will evaluate Apple’s final changes to compliance measures, while also taking into account feedback from the market, especially developers.”
DMA provides large technology companies with a list of what they can and cannot do to increase competition in the digital space. For example, they must provide selection screens for web browsers and search engines to provide users with more choices.
The law gives the EU the power to impose high fines.
Apple is not the only company DMA is targeting. ByteDance, owners of Google parent company Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok, must also comply.
