AI assistant’s new voice Chat features
At the Pixel 9 launch conference, Google launched Gemini’s new voice chat mode, called Gemini Live, which is now available to premium subscribers. This feature allows users to have a natural conversation with multiple voice options and supports interruptions without having to click a button. Users can pause the discussion and resume it later, enhancing the conversation flow.
Gemini Live is currently being launched in English on Android devices and plans to support iOS and other languages in the coming weeks. The update also introduces ten new voice and context-aware features that allow users to inquire about what is displayed on a screen or video. Other upcoming features include extensions to apps such as Keep and YouTube Music.
Google released its AI voice assistant Gemini Live at today’s Pixel 9 series mobile phone launch conference. Gemini Live is the latest Advanced Voice model launched by OpenAI ChatGPT, which can carry out more coherent, more emotionally expressive, and more realistic rounds of conversations.
Gemini Live supports hands-free operation, allowing it to remain running all the time in the background, and Gemini Live allows users to have a free-flowing conversation with Gemini similar to a real person. Users can interrupt Gemini’s response at any time during the conversation to delve into specific topics, or pause the conversation and resume later without losing context. This experience makes interacting with AI more intuitive and flexible, similar to communicating with a real-time assistant.
Gemini Real Time: A hopeful but slightly awkward voice assistant experience
The new voice assistant Gemini Live excels in terms of the speed at which it delivers solutions, and in a recent test it gave the answer in about 15 seconds, which is much faster than Google Assistant. However, users report experiencing some embarrassment when interacting with it due to its anthropomorphic nature. The Verge’s initial experience highlighted the challenge of interrupting assistants; it often continued to speak without prompting.
For example, when asked what dogs thought about entertainment, Gemini Live gave a lengthy answer that felt more like a “preaching” and led to frustration among users. In contrast, another tester found it easier to participate in and received creative suggestions without hesitation, such as creating the Battle of Dungeons and Dragons.
Gemini Live is currently available to users with a Gemini Advanced subscription on powerful Android devices;iOS users will have to wait longer to access it. As the product is rolled out further, it is expected to be compared to other digital assistants, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT voice assistant and Apple’s Siri.
