Google Releases New ‘Open’ AI Model with Focus on Security

Google has released three new “open” generative artificial intelligence models and said they are “safer,””smaller,” and “more transparent” than most models. This is a new addition to Google’s Gemma 2 generation model series, which debuted in May. The new models Gemma 22B, ShieldGemma and Gemma Scope are designed for slightly different applications and use cases, but all have security considerations in common.

Gemma 22B is a lightweight model for generating analytical text that runs on a variety of hardware such as laptops and edge devices. As for ShieldGemma, it is a set of “security classifiers” designed to detect harmful information such as hate speech, harassment and pornography. Finally, the Gemma Scope allows developers to “zoom in” specific points within the Gemma 2 model, making its internal workings easier to interpret.

They complement Google’s Gemma 2 series of generation models, which debuted in May. The new models Gemma 2 2B, ShieldGemma and Gemma Scope are designed for slightly different applications and use cases, but share common security tendencies.

The difference between Google’s Gemma family model and the Gemini model is that Google does not provide the source code for Gemini, which is used in Google’s own products and can also be used by developers. Instead, Gemma is Google’s effort to cultivate goodwill among the developer community, much as Meta tried to do with Llama.

Gemma 22B is a lightweight model for generating analytical text that can be run on a range of hardware such as laptops and edge devices. It is licensed for certain research and commercial applications and can be downloaded from sources such as Google’s Vertex AI Model Library, data science platform Kaggle, and Google’s AI Studio Toolkit.

As for ShieldGemma, it is a collection of “security classifiers” that attempt to detect toxic content such as hate speech, harassment and explicit pornography. ShieldGemma is built on top of Gemma 2 and can be used to filter hints for generating models and content generated by models.

Finally, the Gemma Scope allows developers to “zoom in” specific points in the Gemma 2 model and make its internal workings easier to interpret. Google described it this way in a blog post: “Gemma Scope is composed of a dedicated neural network that can help us untangle the dense and complex information processed by Gemma 2 and expand it into a form that is easier to analyze and understand. By studying these extended views, researchers can gain valuable insights into how Gemma 2 recognizes patterns, processes information, and ultimately makes predictions.”
