South Korea will pilot the implementation of a digital nomad visa system from next month

Yonhap News Agency, Seoul, December 29 According to the Ministry of Justice of South Korea on the 29th, the government will pilot the implementation of the “digital nomad” visa system from January 1 next year, aiming to attract high-income groups of foreign companies working remotely around the world.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the “digital nomad” visa is limited to foreigners working in foreign companies, who must meet the conditions of being able to work remotely and have worked in the same industry for more than one year, and their family members over the age of 18 are also eligible. In addition, applicants must also meet the conditions of more than twice the annual gross national income (GNI, 42.48 million won in 2022, about 233,000 yuan) of South Korea, and participate in personal medical insurance with medical and domestic escort coverage of more than 100 million won, which is relatively high.

In addition, employment or profit-making activities in South Korea with a “digital nomad” visa are restricted, and if you want to work in South Korea, you need to apply for an additional employment visa. The “digital nomad” visa has a stay period of one year from the date of entry and can be extended up to two years. Foreigners who are currently staying in Korea for a short period of time can also switch to this visa if they meet the conditions.

The Ministry of Justice hopes to attract more high-income foreigners to live in Korea by introducing this system, injecting vitality into local economic development and widely promoting Korean attractions and culture. (End)
