Microsoft redoubled its efforts to deploy artificial intelligence to consumers on Tuesday, releasing an updated version of its Copilot chatbot, which can conduct voice conversations and interpret images.
Mustafa Suleyman, executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Artificial Intelligence, said in a blog post introducing the upgraded chatbot: “Copilot will be by your side, in your corner, by your side, and always closely aligned with your interests.
Suleyman is a former leader of artificial intelligence pioneer Google DeepMind and was poached by Microsoft from his startup in March to lead its consumer artificial intelligence division.
Microsoft is a pioneer in releasing generative artificial intelligence technology to everyday users, mainly using models from its $13 billion partnership with ChatGPT manufacturer OpenAI.
Since then, it has been seized by Google and Apple, which are using its dominant position in the global smartphone market to provide consumers with their own artificial intelligence tools.
At the same time, Meta is using the popularity of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp to promote its Meta AI chatbot to the company’s billions of users.
Microsoft said Copilot’s voice feature allows you to interact with your AI partner in a more intuitive way, providing four voice options for brainstorming, quick queries, and even emotional companionship.
Voice features will be mainly available in English-speaking countries, while visual tools are in the testing stage and require users to “opt-in”.
Microsoft emphasized that security is crucial and that data collected from new visual features will be discarded after use.
According to the company, the new feature will “see” what users see on the web page and “answer questions about its content, suggest next steps and help you without disrupting your workflow.”
The company said the feature will start with a “limited list of popular websites to help ensure everyone has a safe experience.”
Microsoft also said it is releasing a new feature called “Think Deeper” that will allow Copilot to reason for more complex problems.
OpenAI released its o1 model last month to solve more difficult problems in science, coding and mathematics, and earlier models have been criticized for failing to consistently provide these issues.
Microsoft said it will also make Copilot more personalized with the Discover feature, which will be “further personalized over time based on your conversation history.”
However, the upgrade has not yet been rolled out in the European Union and the United Kingdom because of stricter restrictions on the use of personal data on large platforms.
