Electric vehicle sales in Norway set world record

Statistics on Monday showed that sales of electric vehicles in Norway accounted for 94% of the market in August, setting a new world record, while sales in other parts of Europe stagnated.
The Norway Road Federation (OFV) said electric vehicles accounted for 94.3% of new car registrations, driven by Tesla’s Model Y, which accounted for 18.8% of sales, as well as Hyundai’s Kona and Nissan’s Leaf.
Norway purchased 10,480 new electric vehicles in August, bringing the total number of electric vehicles since the beginning of the year to 68,435.
Elsewhere in Europe, high prices and insufficient infrastructure have hampered sales of electric vehicles, while sales of hybrid models that combine fossil-fuel engines with electric batteries have increased.
The Scandinavian country, a major oil and gas producer, has set a goal of selling only zero-emission vehicles by 2025, 10 years ahead of the EU’s target.
The country offers generous tax incentives, which make the price of electric vehicles competitive.
“No country in the world can compete with Norway in the electric vehicle race,” OFV Director Oyvind Solberg Thorsen said in a statement.
“If this trend continues, we will soon reach our goal of 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2025,” he said.
In contrast, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, electric vehicles accounted for 12.1% of new car sales in the EU in July, lagging behind gasoline vehicles (33.4%), full hybrid vehicles (32%) and diesel vehicles (12.6%).
