Provide new options for audiobook readers
Audible is about to launch a new feature that invites selected readers in the United States to create AI-generated replicas of their voices to enrich its audiobook products. The move is aimed at meeting the growing demand for audio content, as many books are still not available in this format. Participants will submit voice samples, which Audible will convert into high-quality replicas that authors can select on the AudioBook Creation Exchange (ACX) to use in their audiobooks. Remuneration will be determined based on the circumstances of each book, and any AI-generated content will include a disclaimer.
The beta plan is limited in scope and aims to collect feedback from participants while also focusing on potential negative impacts, such as the impact on the livelihoods of human readers. While some believe the shift to AI is inevitable, others are concerned about its impact on creative characters in audiobook production. Invitations are expected to be issued this week and copyright holders will gain access later this year.
Audible, an audiobook service owned by Amazon, will begin inviting a group of American audiobook narrators to have artificial intelligence train their voices, and then the cloned voices can be used to record audiobooks. The plan, launched this week, aims to add more audiobooks to the service quickly and cheaply, and welcomes traditional narrators to the growing automated world of audiobooks, something many people have so far been wary of. Last year, Amazon began offering U.S. self-published writers whose books are on the Kindle store the option of having their work read out by a universal “virtual voice.” The move was very popular. As of May, more than 40,000 books in Audible had been marked as using the technology.
