Kubernetes abstracts the data center into an operating system engineering project

Kubernetes is an engineering implementation that abstracts “a large number of machines + containers + network + storage” into an “operating system”.
It doesn’t solve “how to run a program”, but:

When the scale of the program is out of control, can the system still be managed by humans?

1. Kubernetes’ problem boundary

Before Kubernetes, the engineering world faced a very real problem:

  • Docker solves the problem of “how to package and run an application”
  • But it didn’t work:
    • Which machine is running on?
    • What should I do if I hang up?
    • How to expand?
    • How do multiple services communicate?
    • How do I update without interruption?

When the system scales from:

  • 1 → 10 units→ 100 units→ 1000 units

“SSH + script + human doxxing” is completely invalid.

The boundaries of Kubernetes are clear:

It doesn’t care about your business logic, it only cares about whether the system is always in the “state you declare”.

2. Declarative system: the engineering core of Kubernetes

The design idea of Kubernetes is essentially just one sentence:

You describe the “target state” and the system is responsible for constantly approaching it.

For example:

replicas: 3

This is not an order, but a constraint.

  • If there are only 2 now→ make up 1
  • If there are 5 → kill 2
  • If the node hangs → migration

This differs from traditional scripted operations in that it is:

From an engineering perspective, Kubernetes is more of a “constraint solving system”.

3. From the perspective of architecture: a typical large-scale distributed system

If you think of Kubernetes as a “tool”, it will be used very shallowly;
But if you think of it as a distributed system sample, the value will be very high.

The core components are very “textbook-grade”:

1. API Server: Single Source of Truth

  • All states are written here
  • etcd is the underlying storage
  • All components can only communicate via API
    This is typical of centralized state + decentralized execution

2. Scheduler: the optimal solution search under constraints

Scheduler’s job is not to “just find a machine”, but to:

  • Filtration (Resources / Affinity / Stains)
  • Scoring (Load / Balancing / Strategy)
  • Select the optimal node

This is essentially a constrained optimization problem.

3. Controller: Continuously align the world

The logic of the controller is very naïve:

观察状态 → 对比期望 → 执行动作 → 再观察

But the engineering value is extremely high because it brings:

  • Automatic repair
  • The state heals on its own
  • System stability

👉 This is where many engineers really understand cybernetics for the first time.

4. Kubelet: Execution layer proxy

  • Run on every node
  • Translate “abstract state” to “real container operation”
  • It is the interface between the control plane and the physical world

4. Why is Kubernetes source code so “heavy”?

Many people will be confused when they look at the source code for the first time:

Why so much code? So much abstraction?

The reason is not “over-design”, but:

  • Support for plug-ins is required
  • Support for cloud vendor differentiation
  • Backward compatibility is required
  • Need to support large-scale evolution

The engineering trade-offs of Kubernetes are:

Complexity is concentrated at the platform layer, freeing up the business layer.

This is a very mature and very expensive engineering decision.

5. It is not a framework, it is infrastructure

Position in the engineering ecosystem:

  • Docker: runtime
  • Kubernetes: The platform kernel
  • Helm/Operator: Ecosystem layer
  • Cloud vendors: hosting and integration

Kubernetes is no longer a matter of “selection”, but a question of “whether to participate in the modern engineering system”.
