Elon Musk’s Grok AI model of xAI can now generate images on X Social networks, although Grok access is currently limited to Premium and Premium+ users on X.
The text prompt below the example images indicates that Grok is using Black Forest Labs ‘FLUX.1 to create these images. Early user-generated images indicate that Grok’s image-generation feature has no limitations in creating images of political figures, and many users are currently taking advantage of this. However, as the U.S. presidential election approaches, the company may face pressure to limit these features.
Elon Musk’s xAI has launched Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini, two chatbots that provide enhanced performance and image generation capabilities. Grok’s image generator, powered by Black Forest Lab’s Flux 1 AI model, allows users to create and publish images directly on X with few protections against abuse. Early examples showed images depicting politicians in potentially harmful scenarios, raising concerns about the spread of false information. Although xAI claims that Grok-2 is “more intuitive, more controllable, and more versatile,” the lack of restrictions on image generation and disclosure has raised questions about X’s commitment to combating false information.
Elon Musk’s xAI has released Grok-2, an upgraded version of its chatbot that is now available on X via a premium subscription. Grok-2 has improved intuitiveness, controllability and versatility, providing image generation capabilities. It has jumped to third place on the LMSYS chatbot rankings, surpassing models from OpenAI, Google and Meta. However, Grok has been criticized for its inaccuracy, especially in terms of U.S. elections. Still, xAI claims that Grok-2 is designed to provide accurate information by identifying missing data and discarding irrelevant posts. The rapid development of the Grok model and the expected launch of Grok-3 later this year highlight the fierce competition in the AI chat robot market.
Although Grok claims to have guardrails to prevent the generation of pornographic, violent or hateful content, its implementation appears to be lax. The user successfully generated the following images:
- Donald Trump wears a Nazi uniform
- Taylor Swift wears her underwear
- Barack Obama stabbed Joe Biden
- Bill Gates smoked cocaine
These examples highlight Grok’s lack of strong security measures, especially compared to OpenAI’s image generator, which blocks hints about real people, Nazi symbols and harmful stereotypes.
Grok’s lenient approach comes as European and British regulators review the way social media platforms handle AI-generated content. The European Commission is investigating whether X may have violated the Digital Security Act, while Ofcom in the UK is preparing to implement the Cybersecurity Act, which includes risk mitigation requirements for AI.
Grok’s lax security measures could further deter high-profile users and advertisers from using X, which could exacerbate existing challenges for the platform.
