Artificial intelligence (AI) researchers have long debated what criteria to use to judge that humans have achieved General Artificial Intelligence (AGI). OpenAI recently developed a system to “customize” AI evolution levels to track progress in developing human-level AI.
On Thursday, July 11, U.S. Eastern Time, a spokesperson for OpenAI said that OpenAI shared the new classification system with employees at the company’s all-person meeting on Tuesday and plans to share these levels of information with investors and outsiders to the company.
OpenAI’s system divides five AI levels, ranking them from low to high on a scale of one to five. OpenAI executives told employees that the company believes its products are currently at level one, but are about to reach level two, a system that can complete basic problem-solving tasks, similar to someone with a doctorate but unable to use any tools.
Specifically, the five levels of the OpenAI system are:
The lowest level: chatbots, which are AI that can interact with humans in conversational language.
Level 2: Reasoner, this AI can solve human-level problems.
Level 3: Agents, this AI is a system that can take action.
Level 4: Innovators, this is AI that can help invention and creation.
The highest level five: Organization. This kind of AI can complete the work of an organization.
The media quoted sources familiar with the matter as saying that at the above-mentioned Tuesday plenary meeting, OpenAI’s leadership demonstrated a research project involving the AI model GPT-4, which OpenAI believed demonstrated some new skills that could achieve human-like reasoning.
An OpenAI spokesperson said on Thursday that OpenAI has been testing new features internally, which is a common practice in the industry.
Regarding the news that OpenAI has developed an AI grading system, some netizens said that they are worried about the risks that AI may bring beyond humans and do not know what impact it will have on the economy and employment.
